4chan “Would Not Bang” meme is a body-snarking satire fail

We all have things about our bodies we don’t like. They’re just little things like non-symetrical eyebrows, a tiny gap in our teeth, a slightly-too-wide nose, etc. On our better days, we can remember that these little quirks are what make us special and unique and beautiful. And besides, we tell ourselves, no one else is paying enough attention to notice them anyway. Right? Wrong, according to an unfortunate new 4chan meme that confirms all your worst suspicions about just how harshly people are judging your appearance.

From Slacktory:

There’s this running joke on the internet about an acne-scarred C.H.U.D. (or Butthurt Dweller) finding fault with any and all images of women in order to alleviate the self-hatred and loneliness that goes along with being a neckbearded netizen — “I can’t find a decent woman, not because I’m just awful in every way, but because all the women in my town have such big foreheads and stubby toes. Disgusting!”

This mindset has borne a new meme, “2/10 Would Not Bang,” in which 4chan users post images of flawless women and compete against each other to find fault in increasingly creative ways, and then dismiss them with the Comic Book Guy-channeling verdict: 2/10, Would Not Bang.

According to Slacktory and the 4chan-ers themselves, this is not men judging women harshly — it’s satire of men judging women harshly. GET IT? Good.

I can see hints of that satire in some of these images. For example, criticism’s like “half of face too bright,” “forehead cut off,” and “being outside on a cloudy day,” are kindof funny because they mock  the judging by judging things that are actually more about the photo composition or staging of the image than the woman herself. Unfortunately, the majority of the criticisms miss the satire mark by a longshot.

“big Jew nose”***
“man shoulders”
“lips too large”
“tan lines”
“too thin”
“big ears”
“jaw too angular”

These are all real things that women (and others) actually fret about. These are things that women are judged by in the harshest and most misogynistic of circles. “Would Not Bang” is the meme version of real-life sorority hazing where female pledges strip to their underwear and let frat boys highlight their flaws in red Sharpie.

I just don’t see any humor in that at all.

***Oh, and did I mention this meme is an excuse for racial bigotry?

  1. Wow. Are they all images of celebrities or real people? Seems like a horrible way to really hurt some poor girl. If you’re 13 and you found you’re face on this site…I can only imagine. The “funny” line were funny (“why is there a foot here?”) but other lines were really hatefull (“big man shoulders”…I have man shoulders too and I’m proud of them).

    • I think they are just random pics they find anywhere on the internet. Could even be people’s facebook pics. (I’m proud of my man shoulders too!)

  2. I’m pretty sure it’s satire because it’s so blatantly not true. First of all, the picture with comments like “man shoulders” and “boobs too small” – you cannot clearly see either her shoulders or her boobs, so obviously these are not real criticisms. Secondly, it is pretty clear that these are all pictures of really hot chicks. Angelina Jolie on a Would Not Bang list? Yeah, right. There is no one on the planet who would not bone her if they got the chance. Clearly these comments are not serious. In other words – lighten up?

  3. I feel like a lot of people do intend the meme as satire- the point seems to be to pick a woman the poster would, in fact, sleep with if he could, and put arbitrary criticisms on it. This seems particularly true in pictures where the criticisms seem more about the background or photography composition. I think the problem is that there are a LOT of people who use the meme as an expression of their frustration or general neckbearddom. I feel like the people who really do mean it as satire and are highlighting eyes and saying, “Eyes not 100% symmetric” or “what is this thing in the background” are saying, “It would be totally stupid and ridiculous to criticize this woman’s appearance, I would totally hit that.” It’s people who are doing the “big jew nose” kind of posts that don’t mean it as satire and are just total douchebags engaging in body shaming. The actual satirists likely just don’t realize that women really are socialized to find fault in everything about their appearance, and yes, might actually think their eyes being slightly asymmetrical makes them totally hideous. It’s ignorance, which is infuriating, but not as infuriating as the intentionally malicious posters.

Normally I don’t give people even that much benefit of the doubt, but there’s a countermeme called “10/10 would def bang” that involves choosing a photo of someone the poster finds particularly unattractive and pretending to highlight attractive traits in the photo. Since the premise of the counter-meme seems to be “choose someone you definitely wouldn’t have sex with, and slap WOULD BANG on it,” Its existence implies that the Would Not Bang meme really means that the poster would actually bang the subject of the post. I find the Would Def Bang meme even more offensive, because it implies it would be ridiculous for anyone to find the subject of the photo attractive.

Then again, this meme totally encourages rating women on their sexual desirability, reducing women to sex objects, and enforces the idea that a woman’s main worth is entirely based on whether men want to sleep with her, so it’s already awful and stupid.

When it comes down to it, we’re talking about 4chan, the internet’s most notorious hive of scum and villainy, so in any case I’m not surprised and this is just one of any possible examples of misogyny that can be found there.

  4. Feminism, Satire, Women, Internet.

You know nothing about above subjects.

(Now go make a blog about me using subjects referring to ‘Women’)

  5. This is coming from a community of antisocial shut-ins who think this equates to sexy:

They probably only wish they could get girls of that caliber, or of any caliber at all.

  6. Yes, its only women that have self esteem issues and are judged harshly by society, do you really believe this crap? It’s a satirical meme.

  7. Could i point out that the would not bang meme was started in a thread of ‘4Chan’ that had a title picture of a fat, balding man, sitting in his underwear typing at a computer. It is not a satire on women, it is a satire on the fat ugly virgins on 4Chan that can’t get a girl and still comment about how there is something wrong with a girl in a picture. Of course if someone of these girls talked to them in real life they would panic and premature in their pants.

That was the basis of this meme, not to put down women.

  8. So all you get from this meme is that it emphasizes on women narcissistic and histrionic traits and makes fun of the jewish nose?
Not a biased point of view at all. Good job, your communication teachers must be proud.

  9. You missed the point completely. If you knew anything about what you were condemning you would see that they are on your side. God damn you are fucking stupid.

  10. AS PER USUAL feminists show how humourless they are and completely miss the point. 4chan uses these images to mock each other as being shut-in nerds who shouldn’t have high standards.

  11. Honestly, I don’t go on 4chan much, but I really feel as though you’re taking their jokes too seriously. I mean, it’s 4chan. They’ve had worse. Much much much worse than just a “meme that confirms all your worst suspicions about just how harshly people are judging your appearance”. You might know this by now. If it offends at this point, move on, because it’s not worth the flack from the likes of /pol/ and /r9k/, I promise. They pop a blood vessel every time they see the word feminist.

  12. I’m sorry, but really, the entire damn point is to point out how buttfucking dumb the guys who reject those girls can be, trying to find -any- flaw about them (or their background) that they can.

I really don’t feel in this case that nitpicking over things that are clearly meant to be taken as a whole is the correct thing to do, considering they are meant to portray ‘subjective’ opinions that already sound terribly silly in the first place.

Lastly, this is fucking 4chan we’re talking about. Do you seriously expect a website that regularly says such things as “OP is a faggot” or “she bought 50 dicks of Ebay and sucked them all, that slut!” to be particularly politically correct? It’s the asshole of the internet for a reason.

  13. It’s supposed to be a joke. Damn people. They do this to other images as well – not just of people. Nice way to draw traffic to your blog.

  14. For the motherfucking love of god, grow a sense of humor. They are taking OBVIOUSLY beautiful women and making fun using minor details that no guy would ever seriously care about, that half the time aren’t even true.

    Jesus tapdancing Christ.

  15. Congratulations, you just did exactly what 4chan wanted people like you to do by getting upset over this. Don’t feed the trolls. Complaining about it does nothing.

  16. Any self-victimizing crybaby who actually takes what came off 4chan as serious criticism, needs their head checked… oh wait what site am I on again? lol nevermind I’m wasting my breath

  17. Uhhhh… I’m a woman and I found those memes a way of expressing how fed up men are with high standards women put on themselves?? You know, when the girl is all ‘this part of my body is not perfect, and this, and that’ and he sees her as beautiful anyway???
