Gendering your lunch

While I’m still on the subject of weight loss, I am eating yogurt. I mentioned this to a friend of mine, and he replied that he was not a big fan of yogurt. This did not surprise me. After all, as Sarah Haskins put it, yogurt is the “official food of women.” (Watch the Target Women yogurt episode now!) As far as gendered food goes, yogurt takes the cake for being marketed exclusively to women, going on the assumption that all women are on a diet. It’s no wonder my male friend isn’t a “big fan” of a girlie diet food like yogurt.

Then I remembered the recent news story about Butch Cupcakes for men, and for a split second I had a wonderful idea! I could capitalize on oppressive gender constructs and market “butch” yogurt to men–Man Yogurt!

…wait…

Okay, so maybe there’s a reason no one has tried to butch up yogurt for men. I’m not sure I can finish my lunch now.

  1. When I first heard about “Butch Cupcakes” I was way excited. Then I found out they meant “butch-as-in-for-dudes” and I was way sad.

  2. Manly cupcakes are by no means a new idea. Heck, I still remember getting suckered into buying Grizzly Chomps when I was a wee lad. What brilliant marketing that was, making us pay more for a cupcake with a bite taken out of it!

I don’t know if they’re still around, but Snackwells used to have an excellent line of chocolate-flavored yogurts. They might not have been marketed exclusively to men, but they were decidedly gender-neutral in their advertising. Come to think of it, those were and are the only types of yogurt I’ve ever purchased. STOP SCREWING WITH MY MIND, ADVERTISERS!
